Willi Baumeister made this painting, Soccer Field, by using soft, diffused shapes that almost float against a textured background, giving a sense of a fleeting moment. It feels like the players are suspended mid-action, their forms blurring into one another. The palette is muted, almost monochromatic, lending the scene a dreamlike quality. Look at how Baumeister uses texture to create depth, it's as though the paint itself is part of the landscape. The human figures are these ghostly blobs that the eye struggles to grasp, but their arrangement gives a sense of movement and interaction. I see a direct, almost primal mark-making, especially in the contrast between the soft background and the more sharply defined figures. The single blade of grass is my favourite part, it makes it look like a stage, but the actors are missing their lines. It reminds me a bit of the early work of Francis Picabia, who was also fascinated by the machine age. I think Baumeister really captures the ambiguity and fluidity of the game, inviting us to see beyond the literal and into a more emotional space.
