Thomas Eakins captured this oil sketch, "Wallace Posing," on a canvas of just over 20 centimeters. The subdued palette and loose brushwork create a contemplative mood. Eakins' interest in realism led him to study human anatomy and movement. Here, he presents a nude male figure with a focus on the structure and form of the body, and in doing so, he challenges prevailing notions of ideal beauty. Instead, his work explores the complexities of the human form. The lack of idealization and use of light and shadow serve to reveal the body's musculature and contours. What is striking is that Eakins captures a naturalistic representation, but also subtly destabilizes conventional artistic values by focusing on the materiality of the human form. It is a form that remains for us to contemplate and reinterpret.
