Joseph Maes captured this image of a room with exhibited engravings in the house of Christoffel Plantijn sometime between 1838 and 1908. Plantijn was an influential printer and publisher during the Renaissance, and his home became a museum after his death. Maes’ photograph gives us a peek into a space designed to celebrate the cultural and intellectual achievements of a specific historical figure. The architecture and curated display reflect a desire to preserve and present Plantijn's legacy. What stories are told, and whose perspectives are valued in these curated spaces? The composition invites us to consider how cultural institutions play a role in shaping historical narratives. It evokes a sense of reverence for the past but it also raises questions about what is included in such a narrative, and what is left out. Ultimately, Maes’ image offers a moment to reflect on the power of historical representation.
