This undated print was made by M. Hemeleers-van Houter and is titled "Zes fab'len, lieve jeugd, word' u hier voorgesteld." It combines rudimentary block printing with hand coloring. The image clusters six vignettes on one sheet, each illustrating a moral lesson. The roughhewn printing technique is especially notable. The artist likely used woodblocks, carving away the negative space around each image, then applying ink to the remaining surface. The paper, probably inexpensive, absorbs the ink unevenly, creating a mottled effect. This is further animated by the application of broad washes of color, crudely applied by hand, leaving much of the paper untouched. The overall effect is raw and immediate, suggesting a direct engagement with the material. Hemeleers-van Houter embraces a non-precious aesthetic, prioritizing communication over refinement. This aligns with the print's educational purpose. It democratizes art making, reflecting a practical approach and a belief in the power of art to reach a wide audience, regardless of technical perfection.
