Versumpfung Einer Venus 9 1963

Otto Muehl created ‘Versumpfung Einer Venus 9’ using paint and a performance. Can you imagine the scene? The model, the mess, the paint... it all makes me think about the physicality of creating art. I wonder what Muehl was thinking when he was making this? I'm curious about the use of his whole body, like Pollock, only here the body in the paint is a Venus, a life-size model, not just the artist's movements. It’s a big move to take painting off the stretcher and onto bodies. When you look at art, you're joining a conversation that’s been going on for centuries. It’s a game of telephone, where each artist riffs off what came before. So much can be said through touch, and here, that touch is all over the place.
