Adolf Wölfli made this drawing, Skt. Adolf=Ballohn=Schiff; Riesen=Stadt, using colored pencil, and you can really feel the touch of the artist in every little mark. It’s so clear that he was deep in the throes of artmaking as a process, letting his imagination lead the way. Look at the surface, how it's built up with these delicate, almost obsessive lines. The texture is smooth, but the energy is wild! The colors, muted yet vibrant, create this strange, otherworldly atmosphere. Focus on that central tower – see how it’s constructed from repeated shapes, each slightly different, creating a sense of depth and movement. It reminds me of the kind of pattern making you find in Hilma af Klint's work. Wölfli wasn't trying to represent reality; he was building his own world, one line at a time. This piece, like so much outsider art, invites us to embrace ambiguity and find our own meanings within its intricate details.
