Johannes Tavenraat made this landscape with figures by a mill using graphite on paper. The artist applied a technique of layering and hatching to evoke the scene. The marks of the drawing build up to create areas of tone and shadow, giving volume and depth to the landscape, in an interplay of light and dark. The very act of repeatedly drawing lines becomes a meditation on the scene itself. The artist’s skilled hand transforms graphite, an ordinary material, into something evocative. The choice of graphite, a readily available material, connects the drawing to everyday life and labor. The softness of the graphite allows for a range of expressive marks, from delicate lines to broad, textured areas. This drawing invites us to consider the relationship between the artist's hand, the landscape depicted, and the social context in which it was created, blurring the lines between fine art and the everyday.
