Thomas Eakins made this study of a boy viewing an object without a date, but it’s a real insight into how he thought about seeing, space, and form. It's all about the process, the underlying structure. I mean, check out those lines, they’re not just lines, they’re like a skeleton showing how everything fits together. It’s like Eakins is saying, "Here’s the secret, here’s the recipe for how we see." And what I love is that it’s not just abstract, there’s this little guy in the corner, all dressed up, looking at this weird, shrinking box. There’s something kind of beautiful about that boy’s silhouette, how it anchors the whole thing. You could almost imagine Sol LeWitt doing something like this, but with a bit more distance, less human presence. It's a reminder that art is really just a way of playing with ideas, of seeing what happens when you put one thing next to another.
