This is ‘Landschap’, or ‘Landscape’ by Cheng Men, made with ink on paper. The subtle variations in tone were achieved by diluting the ink with water, allowing for a controlled wash effect. The artist's calligraphic marks have a directness in the rendering of the natural world that is also a form of mark-making which is a visual language conveying meaning and emotion. The materiality of the paper further influences its absorption of ink, creating subtle textures and variations. The application of ink with brushwork requires a mastery of traditional techniques, where the artist must train to control the nuances of line and tone. This is an approach deeply connected to the tradition of scholarly painting and calligraphy. By understanding the materials and processes involved in its making, we can more fully appreciate ‘Landschap’, and further appreciate the intersection of art, craft, and cultural significance.
