This is a page from an old photo album, Uitje naar het Zuiderpark, Den Haag, author unknown. It's a humble object, yet the gray cardboard and glued-on photos tell so many stories. I imagine someone carefully arranging these snapshots, trying to capture a moment of camaraderie in the park. You can see the push and pull of reality as they staged and posed their subjects. Who are these men, and what’s the story with the goat? I bet the photographer was trying to evoke something they couldn't quite articulate. The act of assembling this album is so intimate. I think about folk art, how it’s not about perfection but about feeling and expression. The choices here – the placement of the photos, the handwritten titles – speak volumes. This album reminds me that art-making is a fundamental human thing, always an exchange of ideas. It’s like all of us are always in conversation, making something new out of the old.
