Curatorial notes

Editor: This untitled photograph by Lucian and Mary Brown shows two children in matching outfits. It’s quite small, only about 5 by 4 inches. What's your interpretation of this piece? Curator: The matching outfits immediately bring to mind societal expectations and constructed identities imposed from a young age. What does it mean to dress children identically, erasing their individuality? How might this image reflect the societal pressures of conformity? Editor: I hadn't considered the theme of conformity. Curator: It makes you wonder about the children’s agency. Also, how might the Browns' position as artists influence their decision to photograph these children in this way? Editor: I see it now. Thanks! Curator: Glad to share my perspective.
