Curator: This is an 18th-century watercolor titled "View of the Château de Noisy," here at the Rijksmuseum. Editor: It has a curiously stage-like quality, almost like a backdrop for a play. The high horizon and meticulously rendered architectural details create a sense of detachment. Curator: That's interesting. Given its Rococo styling, we can see that the Chateau itself symbolizes the aristocratic society that defined the era—their opulent lives visually reinforced. Editor: True, but I see more. Notice how the artist rendered the landscaping. All this meticulous architecture couldn't be realized without material extraction, enslaved labor, deforestation for the land itself. That highly manufactured vista carries a high, if invisible, cost. Curator: A relevant point! And in many ways, we might then understand the work itself—made using paper and watercolor—as itself being intertwined with systems of resource extraction and the art market as a whole. We might see its rococo style, in our moment, not as decorative, but as connected to material exploitation. Editor: Absolutely. Rococo celebrated elegance and leisure, but for whom? The finely dressed figures strolling through the gardens enjoyed privilege made from unacknowledged exploitation. And consider that watercolor wasn't always seen as high art, its materials seen as inexpensive or utilitarian. Curator: Precisely, situating art objects within broader frameworks, thinking critically about the intersections of gender, race and class help reveal complex social dynamics—even those embedded within seemingly placid scenes. It's a work offering rich perspectives that shift across time. Editor: Indeed. What might appear at first glance to be merely a quaint architectural rendering ultimately reveals complex networks of material and power relations. It reminds us that even seemingly decorative works have something meaningful to say about production and making.
