Curatorial notes
Johannes Tavenraat made this drawing, "Hert," with pen in brown and brush in brown and gray. The composition is spare, focusing on the animal form in a study of line and tonality. Notice how Tavenraat uses minimal strokes to define the deers' bodies. The economy of line lends a sense of immediacy, as if capturing a fleeting moment. The use of brown and grey washes adds depth and volume, contrasting with the starkness of the pen lines. The translucent effect of the washes allows the underlying paper to show through, creating a dynamic interplay between surface and depth. This work, like many animal studies, reflects an interest in naturalism and the close observation of the natural world. The deer, rendered with such sensitivity, almost seems to dematerialize into the surrounding space. What remains is a delicate balance between representation and abstraction, inviting us to reflect on the nature of perception itself.
