Odilon Redon created this pastel artwork, 'Boat with Two Figures', sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. The composition features a boat cutting through the water, dominated by a large sail that occupies much of the upper left quadrant. This pale sail sharply contrasts with the dark night sky, speckled with stars. Redon's symbolism emerges through his unique use of colour and form. The figures in the boat are ethereal, their forms dissolved into swathes of colour that suggest rather than define. The juxtaposition of the vibrant orange cargo with the ghostly figures creates a tension, challenging fixed meanings by blending the material and the spiritual. The artwork operates within a semiotic system where the boat may symbolize a vessel of transition, and the figures could represent aspects of the self or the soul. It invites us to question our perception of reality, and recognize the fluidity of meaning inherent in artistic representation.
