Curatorial notes

Pieter Christoffel Wonder created this drawing of a man with a basket on his back sometime between 1780 and 1850. Wonder was a Dutch painter known for historical and genre scenes, and portraits. This image offers us a glimpse into the life of a common laborer, and the intersection of class and labor during the 18th and 19th centuries. The man, burdened by a large basket, is captured in a moment of toil, his posture suggesting the weight he carries both physically and metaphorically, representing the working class. The artist’s choice to focus on such a figure challenges the traditional art world of the time, which often prioritized noble or mythical subjects. There’s an emotional weight in the simplicity of this portrayal, a quiet acknowledgment of the lives and labor that often go unseen. Wonder invites us to consider the dignity and resilience of the working man.
