Harrie A. Gerritz made this screen print titled 'Monument in gemoderniseerd land' which translates to Monument in Modernized Land. Against the backdrop of postwar reconstruction and modernization in the Netherlands, Gerritz presents us with a seemingly simple, rural scene. Yet, this work is charged with complex questions about progress, and what is lost in its name. The flat planes and bold colors give the image a sense of starkness, almost as if the landscape has been reduced to its most basic elements. What does it mean to modernize land? How do we balance the allure of the new with a respect for history and tradition? Gerritz doesn't offer easy answers. Instead, he invites us to reflect on the ever-evolving relationship between humanity and nature. The artist prompts us to consider the emotional impact of such transformations. What feelings does the image evoke in you? Is it a sense of loss, a feeling of hope, or perhaps a bit of both?
