Arsen Savadov made 'Escape to Egypt' as a kind of maximalist fantasia, seemingly without a specific date, and the riot of images and symbols just pours out. It's like a painterly stream of consciousness. Look at the way the figures are built up with these loose, almost frantic brushstrokes. You can almost feel Savadov's hand moving across the canvas, layering color upon color. The paint is applied in such a way that the texture becomes as important as the image itself. Notice the details, like how the light hits the figures' skin, or the way the foliage is rendered with these quick, dab-like marks. There's this wonderful tension between representation and abstraction, where the subject matter dissolves into a sea of pure paint. The overall effect reminds me a bit of James Ensor's work, with its crowded compositions and grotesque imagery. Both artists seem to revel in chaos, embracing ambiguity and multiple interpretations rather than striving for some kind of fixed meaning.
