Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki created this print, "Oponthoud bij het bouwen van de Romeinse brug over de Rijn," using etching, a process reliant on acid to cut lines into a metal plate. This intaglio method allows for detailed narrative scenes, like the two distinct moments captured here. In the left panel, we see the physical labor of bridge construction, with timbers strewn in the foreground, contrasting with the second panel which depicts the administrative and financial aspects of the project. Figures huddle around a table, seemingly in dispute, while others are involved in the handling of money. The stark contrast between the physical work of building and the economic transactions highlights the complex social dynamics inherent in large-scale projects. Chodowiecki's choice of etching allows for a clear depiction of these scenes, traditionally associated with craft, to comment on the economic structures underlying monumental endeavors. It reminds us that behind every great achievement, there are countless unseen hands and complex systems of labor and finance at play.
