This watercolor painting of a desk—made by Henry Meyers, who lived well into his hundreds!—is a testament to how things used to be made. You can imagine Meyers, perhaps an architect, sitting at his own desk laboring over every tiny detail of this meticulously designed storage unit. I imagine him thinking about how the glass will refract light. What kind of wood the cabinet will be made of. I see the love he put into the details: the symmetry of the glass doors, the curves of the drawers and the little circles connecting each element. It seems as though he wanted to present both the exterior and interior aspects of the furniture, showing every aspect of the desk and how it looks as a whole. What a beautiful, considered object!
