Gregory Montreuil's untitled work is made with simple materials - paper, ink, water. It's such a small thing, yet there's something quite expansive about it. It's a field of marks; a constellation or perhaps a map of the artist's mind. I can imagine Montreuil making this, dripping the ink, coaxing it across the surface, watching as it blooms and spreads. There's a real sense of give and take with the materials. The ink is thin and watery, creating delicate lines and soft washes of color. But then there are these denser nodes where the pigment pools. These darker areas really grab the eye. It reminds me a little of Cy Twombly's work, the way he used loose, gestural marks to evoke a sense of history and mythology. Artists are constantly responding to one another, riffing on ideas, picking up where others have left off. We don't need fixed interpretations. Instead, let’s embrace the ambiguity.
