Johannes Tavenraat created this page of landscape sketches with graphite, likely as studies for larger works. We see four distinct scenes, each framed by the edge of the composition. The artist explores different atmospheric effects and compositional strategies within each miniature landscape. Notice how the varying densities of graphite create depth and mood, from the misty distance in the upper-left to the dense thicket surrounding the waterfall in the upper-right. Each scene offers a different perspective, a unique way of seeing and structuring the natural world. Consider the bottom-right sketch, where figures are placed on a horizon line. Here, the contrast of light and shadow delineates form and suggests narrative. Tavenraat uses the formal constraints of the page to explore the poetics of space, and of human presence within it. These sketches remind us that landscape is not just a place, but a constructed view.
