This black and white photo album, whose creator is unknown, contains images titled Ceremonie Duitse Wehrmacht. When I look at these orderly rows of soldiers, I imagine someone trying to capture a perfect moment, but maybe also feeling a sense of unease. Were they thinking about the people in the photographs, or were they more focused on the technical aspects of image-making? Photography is a bit like painting, right? The photographer, like the painter, makes choices about composition, light, and what to include or leave out. This shapes how we see and understand the image. Each photograph reveals a specific perspective and has a unique energy to it. The uniform of the soldiers brings to mind the seriality of Andy Warhol’s pop images, although there is nothing colourful here, just repetition. Artists respond to their worlds in so many ways. I'm fascinated by how images like these can provoke dialogue and introspection across time.
