A. Tinbergen created this drawing of a girl dancing with a doll, with ink on paper. The paper gives the artwork its foundational form. The artist would have selected it for its weight and texture to hold the ink. We see this manifested in thin, even lines, which the artist used to suggest depth and movement. The application of ink becomes the primary means of expression. With a pen or a fine brush, the artist carefully rendered the scene, paying attention to the interplay of positive and negative space. Note the difference in the application of ink to delineate the girl and the doll. The doll is given a heavier, bolder application of ink, which makes it stand out against the delicate lines used for the figure of the dancing girl. The handmade frame around the scene speaks to traditional techniques of drawing and design. Appreciating this artwork means recognizing the artist's material choices and technical skills in their work.
