Saul Steinberg made this work, with the descriptive title *Woman on a Wicker Sofa*, in 1967 using pencil and colored pencil on paper. The support is literally a piece of paper torn from a sketchpad, complete with a visible spiral binding at the edge. This everyday material gives the drawing an informal quality. Steinberg has deftly used pencil to create an environment and a figure in it. You’ll notice the wicker couch, the pictures in the background, the woman’s clothing, and even the floral design on her shoes. All rendered with remarkable economy. The drawing's power lies in the contrast between its simple tools and its complex effect. Steinberg was a master of line and composition, and shows us that even the most humble materials can be used to create something beautiful and thought-provoking. It challenges us to reconsider our assumptions about art and its value.
