This humble cup was created by Sugimoto Tatsuo, a Japanese ceramicist, and is made of stoneware. The vessel has been thrown on a potter’s wheel, which is already interesting. This technology, while ancient, implies a certain volume of production. But what’s particularly lovely is the textural contrast: the exterior is decorated with bold, simple markings in white slip, and the interior with a more rugged, almost geological surface. The cup has been fired in such a way that the colors are deep and rich. It’s a beautiful example of studio pottery, which since the early 20th century, has offered an alternative to industrial production – yet must also exist within a capitalist economy. So, how does a potter make a living? By balancing the need for efficiency with the desire for individuality, as we see so wonderfully demonstrated here.
