Mariam Aslamazian painted ‘The women from India’ with oils in a very particular style, it's huge, over six feet! I see this painting as an exchange between two places: India and Soviet Armenia, where Aslamazian lived and worked. I can imagine the artist standing before the canvas, layering the vibrant shades of yellow, green, purple, and red. The surface of the painting becomes a site of inquiry, where gestures materialize into meaning. It's clear that the artist knew the rules of painting, but she wasn't afraid to break them. Aslamazian’s approach resonates with other painters who explore different ways of seeing and experiencing the world. I think of the formal innovations of Matisse in the early 20th century as he painted North Africa. These artists are in conversation across time, inspiring one another. Ultimately, this painting is an embodied expression of an artist who embraces uncertainty.
