Richard Lindner, a German-American artist, painted "Ice" using oil on canvas. Lindner came to America in 1941 after having fled Nazi Germany. Lindner made his name with paintings of brash, sexualized women. This particular example contains an unusual combination of commercial and political signifiers. A fetishized figure is framed by bold, flat geometric forms, with the word "ICE" emblazoned in block letters across the composition. At the figure’s pelvis is a five-pointed star containing a Native American head in profile, perhaps evoking the appropriation of Native imagery in mass-produced advertising. Lindner’s work often suggests that the human body itself has become a commercial product, a vessel for political messages, and a site of power. In order to explore this further, one might usefully research the history of advertising or the artistic culture of New York in the 1960s.
