Julius C. Turner etched this portrait of Einstein sometime in the 20th century. Just look at those lines! You can imagine Turner, head bent to the plate, coaxing the needle, now scratching, now caressing, across its surface. The web of marks comes together to create a familiar, and yet deeply human image. Did Turner feel intimidated portraying such a profound figure? Did he strive to capture Einstein's brilliance in his eyes? Did he want to do more than just render a likeness? Of course! He wanted to leave his mark too. This print resonates with other artists and printmakers who grapple with the complexities of portraiture, from Rembrandt to Chuck Close. We can all see something of ourselves reflected in the faces of others. And so the conversation continues!
