Editor: We’re looking at "Bowl with lotus petals," a ceramic piece dating back to the 12th century. It’s currently housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I’m immediately drawn to its delicate color – it's so soothing! What do you see in this piece that maybe I’m missing? Curator: Oh, the tranquility is definitely intentional. That pale celadon glaze, it's whispering, not shouting! These bowls weren't just for holding your ancient granola. The lotus, as you probably know, signifies purity and enlightenment, especially important in Buddhist cultures of the time. Can you imagine the meditative experience of eating from this? Or perhaps it was even placed as an offering. Does the pale color remind you of anything, like morning mist, or even jade? Editor: Absolutely, a calming morning mist! It's easy to imagine someone using it ritually, and not spilling a drop. Curator: Exactly. These bowls were made using stoneware. It involves high-firing techniques and allowed the piece to be so refined, elegant. It isn’t flashy. The technique created these subtle, almost imperceptible lotus petals which must have demanded immense control, wouldn’t you agree? Editor: Absolutely, this bowl reflects intentional care, it reminds me how something functional can be deeply spiritual. Curator: And isn’t that what all art, or everything should aspire to, a marriage of function and soul? Thank you for helping me consider this piece again. It whispers more today, I think. Editor: This was awesome, thank you for all your insights. I’ll be sure to see art as whispers, not shouts!

The exterior of this small bowl was carved with a double row of lotus petals before being covered in green-blue celadon glaze. Many Goryeo bowls of this type found there way to medieval Japan, where they were highly prized by the aristocracy and religious elites alike.
