Edouard Manet painted "Woman Fastening her Garter" during a period of great social and artistic change in France. At the time, ideas about gender, class, and sexuality were being challenged and renegotiated. Here, Manet presents us with a scene of intimate domesticity that was typically hidden from public view. While the work ostensibly depicts a private moment, the woman’s near nudity and the intimate act of adjusting her garter brings questions of spectatorship and objectification to the fore. As viewers, we are invited into this private space, but the woman’s averted gaze and the overall sketchiness of the painting create a sense of distance, almost as if we're not meant to be here. Her body is undeniably present, yet she seems to resist being fully exposed or known. The loose brushstrokes and unfinished quality add to the sense of voyeurism, making us question our own role in this exchange. The painting becomes a meditation on the power dynamics inherent in the act of looking, reminding us that seeing is never a neutral act.
