In naked dreams the silence screams
Curatorial notes
“In naked dreams the silence screams,” is a painting, origin unknown, that plunges us into a world where the boundaries of reality blur with the subconscious. The figures here seem to float between worlds - a nude person reclines, seemingly unaware of the woman riding a beast in the foreground. The ambiguity of the figures allows us to consider the social and cultural contexts around gender and power. Who is preying on whom? Is the beast being ridden, or riding? The title of the work itself is open to interpretation; it’s an invitation to consider the unseen forces that shape our perceptions of reality. The exotic natural setting further complicates the story being told. The lush vegetation and distant landscape bring questions of identity to the fore, asking us to consider our relationship with the world around us. With the artist unknown, it is up to us to decide what is happening in this strange dreamscape.
