How do you interpret this work and its historical context? Curator: Considering the pictorialist style, let's look beyond the surface. Pictorialism, popular then, wasn't just about pretty landscapes. It was often a deliberate rejection of industrial modernity. How might this image function as a critique of rapid industrialization and its impact on traditional landscapes and ways of life? It seems the artist selected the angle and exposure, so it feels like stepping back in time. Editor: I hadn’t thought of it as a rejection, but more as idealization. Could it be both? Perhaps yearning for a past that never truly existed, considering how romanticized such landscapes often were, and the very technology that captured this, in service of a particular ideal. Curator: Exactly. This tension is crucial. We can examine whose "past" is being idealized and who is excluded from that idyllic vision. Who had access to these leisure spaces like Tegernsee, and whose labor supported them? How does it reflect or subvert social and class structures of the time?
