Editor: Here we have Jacques Callot's "Resurrection," an etching. It's small, yet the artist achieved so much drama! I notice the figures reacting in awe. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Notice the radiant light emanating from Christ. Light is a consistent symbol of divinity and knowledge. It pierces through the darkness, suggesting enlightenment. What emotional response does this visual language evoke in you? Editor: It definitely suggests overcoming darkness and ignorance with clarity. I hadn’t considered the light as a psychological element. Curator: Callot uses familiar symbols to evoke a powerful emotion, and to reinforce the cultural narrative of the Resurrection. Symbols are powerful. Editor: I learned so much looking at how symbolic language is used here. Thanks!
