Editor: This is Paul Gavarni's lithograph, "La "biche" au Bois," from the series "Masques et Visages." It gives off a feeling of social commentary. What kind of symbols do you see operating in this image? Curator: The title itself, "doe in the woods," is a loaded symbol. The doe is often associated with innocence and vulnerability. Gavarni uses visual shorthand to critique societal power dynamics, does he not? Editor: That makes a lot of sense. I hadn't considered the title so literally. Curator: Think about the male figure’s towering top hat and stern expression. Does it convey anything particular? Editor: It suggests the societal pressure faced by women. I never thought about lithographs having all these hidden stories to tell! Curator: It is these untold stories which reveal visual culture's imprint on our minds.
