Pablo Picasso made this painting, Family at the seashore, with oil on wood, but it's really about color. The rosy pinks and sandy yellows of the figures make them seem almost baked by the sun, like terracotta sculptures left on the beach. The texture is so smooth, it's like he's sanded down the brushstrokes, which makes it feel both classical and a little strange. Notice the way the child's little hand rests on the father's face; it is such a tender gesture, but the color is slightly off, creating a subtle dissonance. It's like a dream, where everything is familiar but slightly out of sync. Picasso was so good at taking what he learned and pushing it in new directions. He's like the ultimate art conversationalist, always responding to what came before and setting the stage for what comes next. It reminds me of Matisse’s Bathers by a River, both have that similar feeling of a beach scene with figures almost monumental in their simplicity. But ultimately, he leaves us with more questions than answers, and that’s the beauty of it.
