Isaac Israels made this drawing of a street scene at night with graphite, capturing the atmosphere of a city street as dusk settles. I'm thinking about the artist standing on the street, charcoal in hand, squinting at the scene before him. The marks are so expressive, aren’t they? Quick, dark slashes that seem to capture not just the buildings and figures, but also the feeling of being there, the chill in the air, the sound of footsteps. The artist isn’t trying to give us a photorealistic rendering. The architecture looms up, a mass of scribbled lines with a stark, almost menacing presence. I imagine Israels standing there, feeling the weight of the charcoal in his hand, making the marks, letting the dark tones shape the scene. The dark, brooding quality reminds me a bit of other artists, but I like how Israels uses the starkness of the graphite to suggest the weight of the urban environment. It’s like he’s saying something about how we experience the city – a place of anonymity, shadows, and fleeting moments.
