Søren Lund created this etching of two horses pulling a wagon through a forest. The printmaking process demands careful preparation and skilled execution. Lund would have started by coating a metal plate with a waxy, acid-resistant substance. He then used a sharp needle to scratch an image into this coating, exposing the metal beneath. When the plate was immersed in acid, it bit into these exposed lines, creating grooves. The deeper and wider the grooves, the more ink they would hold. The plate was then inked, wiped clean, and pressed against a sheet of paper. The pressure would transfer the ink from the grooves onto the paper, resulting in a reversed image of the original drawing. In this print, Lund's fine lines capture the texture of the horses’ coats and the rough ground. The tonal gradations convey a feeling of depth and atmosphere. The labor-intensive process and skilled craftsmanship imbue the artwork with a sense of care and attention, elevating the image of working animals and the social landscape they occupy. Appreciating the materials, making, and context allows us to look beyond the surface and recognize the artistic merit embedded within the craft.
