Franz Kobell created this etching, *Rocky Coast with a View of the Sea, in the Foreground Figures Around a Larger-Than-Life Statue*, at the turn of the 19th century. As the print suggests, this was a time when the classical world was being rediscovered through art and archaeology. We see this in the romanticized vision of nature and the imposing statue, which would have evoked a sense of awe, reflecting the period's fascination with antiquity. Notice how the figures in the foreground are dwarfed by the statue and the landscape, a common technique in Romantic art used to emphasize human insignificance in the face of nature and history. The artwork prompts reflection on the relationship between the present and the past and our place within it.
