William Baziotes made this Pierrot painting using oil on canvas. Looking at this painting is like witnessing a performance. I imagine Baziotes building up these shapes intuitively, responding to the push and pull of colour and form. See how the triangle, the eye, the circular blob, they all seem to float in this dreamy, watery space, shifting and emerging like characters in a play? I wonder what Baziotes was thinking about when he made this work, and how it connects to his interest in surrealism. The thin layers of paint create a hazy atmosphere, as if we are peering into a subconscious landscape. The brushstrokes are loose and gestural, particularly in the background, adding a sense of movement. It’s like he is inviting us to join him in this space of ambiguity, where things aren’t quite defined but feel emotionally charged. Ultimately, painting is a conversation across time, isn't it? I love how Baziotes' Pierrot speaks to the work of other artists, inviting us to contemplate the many ways of seeing and experiencing the world.
