Curatorial notes

Aelbert Cuyp etched "Two Cows and Herders" with delicate lines that reveal more than just a pastoral scene. The cow, a symbol of nourishment and pastoral life, is as old as art itself. The prominence of cattle here brings to mind ancient Minoan frescoes depicting bulls, emblems of virility and power, or even further back to the Egyptian goddess Hathor, embodied by a cow, a symbol of maternal care and abundance. Even today, in some cultures, cattle embody wealth and wellbeing. These archetypes evolve, adapting to new cultural landscapes, yet their roots remain entwined with our collective memory. The cows exude tranquility and silent strength; the composition evokes a sense of timeless connection to the earth and its bounty. These images are not static, but rather are cyclical, resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings across historical contexts.
