Robert Huot created *Silver Kiss* using acrylic on canvas. At first glance, it might seem simple, even minimal. But consider the layers of diluted pigment, built up slowly to achieve the desired tonality. The surface would have to be prepared meticulously to avoid imperfections. The edge where the two planes meet is razor-sharp, a testament to a careful process. It takes a long time and a lot of skill to make something that appears so effortless. Huot’s practice speaks to wider issues of labor, politics, and consumption. His choice of commonplace, commercially available materials and processes contrasts with traditional fine art practices. By blurring the boundaries between painting and industrial production, *Silver Kiss* challenges conventional distinctions between high art and craft, encouraging us to consider the cultural significance of the materials and making processes.
