Curatorial notes

Jan Groover made this still life photograph, entitled Kitchen Still Life #8. She brings a painterly eye to her compositions, focusing on the arrangement of the mundane. Here, she juxtaposes the slick surfaces of metal kitchenware against a patterned backdrop. Note the play of light across the objects. It's as though she's asking us to reconsider the beauty we often overlook in everyday items. The photograph itself has a tactile quality. You can almost feel the coolness of the metal, the smooth surface of the utensils, and the slightly retro feel of the polka dot fabric. It’s a dance of textures and light that elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. Groover's work reminds me a little of the early colour photography of William Eggleston. Both artists find beauty in the everyday and challenge our perceptions of what is worthy of artistic attention.
