Luis Feito made this painting with oils, and it is all about how to make a painting with yellow, black, and red. The making of this painting feels front and center. Looking at it, what strikes me is the boldness of the strokes and the contrast of colors. The texture is so immediate, especially in that red patch, like the paint was just slapped on, wet on wet, with maybe a palette knife. You can see the physicality of the medium, the brushstrokes, the little ridges and valleys in the paint. The black marks feel like anchors, holding the composition together, while the red adds this jolt of energy. It makes me think about Franz Kline, you know, in its simplicity and directness. Both artists seem to be having a conversation about how much you can take away and still call it painting. It's this constant back and forth, this push and pull between intention and accident, control and release.
