This invitation and program for a cabaret performance was created by members of the COC, the Dutch LGBTQ+ organization, sometime in the 20th century. It is made from pasted paper. Printed text and photographs are collaged together, with the homemade quality of the announcement conveying a sense of community and resourcefulness. The typed program lists titles such as "Heterophobia," "Miss Dynamite," and "Booken" – promising an evening of entertainment with a political edge. The very act of producing and distributing this invitation was a form of activism, a defiant assertion of LGBTQ+ identity in a time when homosexuality was still stigmatized. The DIY aesthetic and the sharing of labor, highlight the collaborative spirit of the COC, and remind us that even seemingly simple objects can be powerful tools for social change. This piece challenges us to see the making and circulation of ephemera as vital to queer history.
