Nicolai Abildgaard made this sketch titled ‘Galilei afsværgende sine "vildfarelser" for munkedomstolen’ at an unknown date. The scene depicts Galileo Galilei recanting his scientific beliefs before the Holy Office of the Inquisition. Abildgaard, working in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, engaged with the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason and individual liberty, while also living through a period of political upheaval and revolution. In this context, we can see how this piece captures the drama of institutional power against individual thought. It invites us to consider the personal and emotional toll of such a forced recantation. While focusing on a historical event, Abildgaard’s work also speaks to broader themes of intellectual freedom and the conflict between science and religious authority. It calls for a reflection on the consequences of suppressing knowledge and the courage required to stand by one’s convictions, even in the face of overwhelming pressure. This piece is a powerful reminder of the human cost of ideological battles.
Comments
The front of the drawing shows the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) kneeling before the ecclesiastical court at the Minerva Convent in Rome. Here, on June 22nd 1633, he was forced to renounce his (accurate, as we now know) theories of the sun as the centre of our solar system. The drawing can be interpreted as showing Abildgaard’s sympathy for the unjustly treated Galileo. A piece of paper has been glued to the back, with Latin fragments in Abildgaard’s hand. These are fragments of the script written by the church that Galileo was to read aloud and swear to respect. Abildgaard probably glued the text onto the work himself.
