Hubert Quellinus created this drawing of a bearded man in the 17th century. Quellinus, like other artists of his time, was deeply influenced by classical antiquity. In the 17th century, the figure of the bearded man carried potent cultural weight, often embodying wisdom, authority, and maturity. Representing the male subject in bust form, Quellinus participates in a tradition that valorizes male leadership. Note, however, the subtlety of Quellinus’s hand. The slight turn of the head, the soft rendering of the beard, the gentle draping of the toga – these details humanize the figure, inviting a more intimate connection with the viewer. The image may invite you to contemplate the power dynamics inherent in representation itself. It challenges you to consider whose stories are told, and how societal norms shape our perceptions.
