P.C. Skovgaard created this print of Frederik VI “on lit de parade,” or lying in state. Note the prominent Maltese Cross emblazoned on the royal shroud. The cross, of course, is a ubiquitous symbol, but the Maltese Cross specifically evolved from its association with the Knights Hospitaller during the Crusades. Consider its recurrence in heraldry across Europe, each time imbued with meanings of chivalry, sacrifice, and Christian duty. But here, draped over a deceased king, the cross speaks more to a ritualized passing of power. Death and symbols of power are a potent, primal combination. The image resonates with the viewer, touching on collective memories and subconscious understandings of mortality and legacy. This motif, seen through centuries and cultures, evolves, yet remains a powerful, cyclical symbol.
