Aert Schouman created this portrait of François-Louis Colins with etching around 1746. This small print is rendered in a monochrome palette, dominated by subtle gradations of grey that define the textures and forms within the composition. Notice how Schouman balances the figure’s placement. The composition is bisected into dark and light sections, emphasizing the play of light across Colins’ face and attire. The crispness of the lines around the face draws our attention directly to his gaze. The intricate details of the lace cuffs and collar contrast with the smoother planes of his jacket, highlighting a concern with the tactile qualities of the depicted fabrics. The etching technique allows Schouman to define textures, from the smoothness of the skin to the roughness of the wig. The semiotic interplay between light and shadow not only models form but also hints at the subject's character and status. The artist uses the formal structure of the portrait to investigate broader themes of representation and identity.
