Editor: This print, “Gezicht op een toernooischool,” made sometime between 1742 and 1801 by Georg Balthasar Probst, depicts an elaborate tournament scene. The image feels so staged, with these almost doll-like figures neatly arranged. What social narratives are embedded in a work like this? Curator: I see a carefully constructed image, certainly. We can view it as more than a straightforward depiction of a tournament, but as a reflection of the social hierarchies and power dynamics of the period. The staged quality you observe, and the rigid arrangements, are important visual cues that this wasn't just entertainment. This was about reinforcing social roles. Who has access to the upper tiers of seating? What sartorial signifiers indicate social standing? Editor: The red coats do stand out among the spectators. Curator: Exactly. These colors, the clothing styles, the presence and absence of certain groups – all contribute to understanding who is participating in, and who is excluded from, this performance of power. How might the individuals in the audience interpret this display? Editor: I imagine for those in positions of authority, seeing it validated is reassuring, but for those excluded or relegated to the lower echelons, it must reinforce their marginalized status. A stark visualization of their social position. Curator: Precisely. The 'performance' in the ring dictates how society is ordered in space, confirming each person's position. By analyzing what is seen we see past the event to the politics behind it. Does this prompt new perspectives on the work for you? Editor: Absolutely. Seeing it as a staging of societal structure makes it much more than just a historical record of a tournament. I never thought about an art piece “ordering society”. Thanks! Curator: It's been my pleasure to explore this with you. The past speaks volumes if we're willing to listen critically.
