Curatorial notes

This is a postcard to Philip Zilcken, likely made around 1900 by Frans Erens. It's fascinating how something so simple, a handwritten note on card, becomes a little time capsule. The writing, look at that flow! The ink, probably applied with a fountain pen, varies in thickness, giving the text a real sense of depth. You can almost feel the movement of Erens’ hand as he formed each letter. The postmarks and stamp, they are like layers of history, each mark a trace of the journey this little piece of paper undertook. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbled paintings, where the act of writing becomes a form of drawing, a way of capturing thought and feeling in a single gesture. The off-white paper creates a gentle, warm backdrop for the dark ink, a subtle contrast that draws you in. Like all good art, there's a beautiful ambiguity here. We can't know exactly what Erens wrote to Zilcken, but the physical presence of the card, the texture of the paper, the faded ink, all speak volumes.
